Stansted Information
Stansted is the UK's 4th busiest international airport and the recent SKYTRAX award winner for being the World's Best Low Cost Airport in 2012. This award reflects the hard work that Stansted has been involved in to attract the top low cost airlines which has enabled so many more passengers to travel to europe and beyond in recent years.
The biggest operator is Ryanair who use the airport as their primary UK base. As well as Ryanair, other airlines include Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, GermanWings and EasyJet to name just a few. Getting to continental Europe has never been easier!
The actual terminal building, designed by Foster Associates Architects, was first opened in 1991 but then, in response to rapid growth from the late 1990s, the terminal was extended in 2008.
Despite the global economic downturn Stansted is still handling 18 million passengers a year although this is a reduction from the 2007 peak when the airport handled 24 million passengers. In 2010 the airport operators BAA abandoned plans to extend the airport and provide a 2nd runway at Stansted. With plans on a further London airport being required in future years it will be interesting to see if these plans re-surface once again.
Getting from or to Stansted
The airport is located in north Essex and is just a 35 minute drive from the suburbs of North London and is a 45 minute train journey from London Liverpool Street.
Trains
Stansted, with the Stansted Express, is in fact that only airport with a direct overland train service right into the heart of the City of London. The service is fast and convenient for East and the City of London.
Bus & Coach Services
There are many bus services to and from Stansted also which includes EasyBus, Terravision and National Express. Prices vary and you may find that some of the travel times are quite long.
